from my grandfather's album

I have started my final project for the Master program in Konstfack. It goes well right now, I am going to do a comic book basic on a true story of my garandfather’s father who killed a Japanese invader to safe her sister who was attacking by the Japanese invader during 1939-1945 in our hometown of Wang Guanliu Village in Leling,Shandong province, China. The reason why I chose this story is that I felt it is very very important to my family to document this case and share with others. This story is a turn point to my family in that years, people left home and hide in everywhere to escape from the invader’s arresting action to my family. This let me feel so responsible to document this story with my llustrations.

I interviewed my grandfather, he was very excited and glad to let me do this project. He is 100% support me to makeup this story and gave me the permission to change any thing I want. I named the story HIDE as there is a magic space for hid our family when the invaders bust to our house. I am interested in both the hiding space and the way of the villagers against with the invaders. Farm tools became the weapon like in my grandfather’s father’s case, he killed the invader by a steel pick. And I can image the expressions and actions of the villagers. They are so brave and united.

Well, How to narrative it? Or we can say document it? I personally think I would like to show with wordless images. Maybe not all the images are silent but most of them I would not use word on that. I believe it will have an interesting effect with out lose any points of the story. To leave a space for the audience’s imagination is a good thing for making pictures, I don’t think an illustration should narrative all the words’ saying. Those two parts should do a perfect teamwork.

I listened hundred times of the story above from my grandfather. What recorded into my mind was not the words he said, it was pictures I imaged, I don’t know what is the countryside looks like, I never seen my grandfather’s aunt… but I still can image it. And I think you have also had some pictures about this story also in your head. Why I just leave the space to the audience to finish their own story without my language to disturb them?!

Language is also a trouble to me to communicate as well as a tool. My mother language is Chinese. I cannot communicate perfectly with the local people here. And I met troubles with the text file, mail, information, text signs in the city. It made me focus on something beyond the word. Images is my first choice to read, I think the image has the fastest effect with giving information. That’s why we need signs and maps.

OK, can the image tell a series story? I have found many artists who did it yet, for example Mr Clement’s "The Gorgeous Habour"2004 and M Tom Dieck’s La FM .

I love that,I think the images can make the reader have more desire to finish the whole series and find their own satisfaction. Then, everyone would enjoy your images, which is a great cheering!

When I walk through the aisle in my apartment I just feel it is empty,so I think I should do some thing to make it fun.
I choose pictures from my computer and I just work on it, I didn't know what would they looks like in the beginning, but I love what I have done, there were no sketches. It just came out naturally. I like it!
Sometimes part of the image is not perfect but I would love to keep it there and not to draw it again,I believe the first draw is the most beautiful touch.
